Virtual Postpartum Doula Services across Canada

A great option for those who are looking for support delivered virtually. I will still be able to nurture, educate, assess and refer as needed.

Check-ins are very flexible and can even be scheduled late into the evening. Phone, text, or video chat – you decide how we connect!

30-minute sessions are $18 while 60-minute sessions are $30. Packages are available. This service is also suitable for families whose babies haven’t arrived yet but who are bursting with questions!

Postpartum Planning

Going far beyond figuring out how many diapers and outfits baby will need, your postpartum plan is a guide to use after baby arrives.

We’ll meet for around 2 hours virtually where it will be part education, part setting realistic expectations, part building circles of support, and part resource sharing. Your postpartum planning workbook is around 50 pages long and includes a close look at perinatal mood & anxiety disorders (PMADs). While it may not be possible to prevent PMADs, we’ll look at controlling the controllables and minimizing your risk. You’ll end up with a customized but flexible plan to refer to in those early days and weeks.

Ideally, our planning session should be held before baby arrives.

The cost for this service is $75 on its own but it can be bundled with other services at a discounted rate.

Training and Other Services

Training

In the future, I will be offering courses on perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs). There will be 2 streams  – one for doulas looking to dive deeper into PMADs than what was covered in their initial doula training and one for new and expecting families who may have a desire to learn more. I am also working on a newborn care class, and a postpartum recovery/4th trimester class. If any of these are of interest to you, please contact me.

Hopefully in the fall, I will be ready to roll out the Bringing Baby Home course, developed by the Gottman Institute. Read more about the research that led to this course here.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the evidence-based benefits of postpartum doula care?

1) PREPARES YOU FOR BABY AND PARENTHOOD. Feeling prepared and having realistic expectations for what’s to come is so helpful before baby arrives. Side effects include reduced stress and increased confidence in your parenting abilities.

2) SAVES YOU TIME! No more googling – doulas help pull all of the relevant, evidence-based information and resources together for you plus share awesome tips and tricks.

3) REDUCES THE RISK OF PERINATAL MOOD & ANXIETY DISORDERS. Having a doula supporting you means that you can focus on rest and recovery while getting to know your new baby. Doulas can also help screen for PMADs and ensure parents receive appropriate and timely referrals. As a volunteer with Postpartum Support International, I have many resources and referrals readily available should they be needed.

My partner/spouse/parent will be here with me and the baby. Why would I need a postpartum doula?

How wonderful that you will have support once baby arrives! A lot of people who have support like this appreciate that a postpartum doula is non-judgmental, evidence-based, and has up-to-date information and resources readily available. For some, having continuity of care is important so that when their initial help leaves or goes back to work, a postpartum doula can step right in. Keep in mind too that doulas do not take the place of the partner but help the partner to shine! As well, if you continue to have help with practical tasks around your home (laundry, meals, dishes, etc.), meeting virtually may be helpful to ensure that you still receive emotional and informational support.

I’ve had a baby before so I think I know what I’m doing. How could a postpartum doula help?

If you’ve been down this road before, you may remember how exhausting it can be looking after a baby and trying to recover yourself. Having an active older child(ren) takes it to the next level! A doula can look after baby while you spend precious one-on-one time with your other child(ren). Alternately, you can spend time with baby while your other child(ren) is entertained by me. Win-win!

I've made a birth plan. Do I really need a postpartum plan?

You may have heard the analogy that birth is like a wedding (one big day) but postpartum is like marriage (the rest of your life). While it is certainly important to plan for birth and have support on the big day, a lot of people don’t realize how important a postpartum plan can be. Extending beyond a birth plan, this document serves as a guide to prepare you for baby’s arrival and beyond.

Will having you serve me virtually be helpful?

Virtual support allows you to have more opportunities for check-ins at different hours of the day and to ask questions. I can still provide most of the same services that I do in-person but the emphasis will be on emotional and informational support. Virtual support can also be helpful if you have a million questions before baby arrives! This type of support works especially well for clients who live outside of Winnipeg or Headingley, Manitoba.

When do you typically provide support?

If I am supporting a family in-person, I tend to work primarily during the daytime with a typical shift being 3-4 hours. As needed, I can offer limited evening and/or weekend support. If I am providing virtual support, I tend to offer times that extend for a longer portion of the day and evening with a virtual session being 30-60 minutes in length. With some families, I have been their first visitor when they return home from the hospital. With others, I have started in-home support up to a few weeks after they have arrived home because they have had other supports in place.

How early should I book a postpartum doula?

The earlier the better! Booking early gives us a chance to really get to know each other better before baby arrives. I do bi-weekly check-ins before the birth so there are lots of opportunities for connection and to ask questions.

I've already had my baby. Is it too late to book you?

Definitely not. Sometimes our situation changes and we may end up with less support than expected or we may find it more challenging than expected after baby arrives. If I have availability in my schedule, I’d be happy to help you out.

Can you customize a package for me?

If none of our most popular packages seem like a good fit, I’d be happy to customize a package for you based on the unique needs of your family.
